Working primarily with acrylic, mixed media, charcoal and collage elements, McAlister embraces spontaneity and chance while maintaining strong compositional control. Her paintings blur the boundary between the visual and the performative, inviting viewers not only to observe, but to feel.
In 1993, McAlister founded the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation which has since grown into one of the largest organisations of its kind globally. Impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands of young people each year, her contribution to the arts has been recognised internationally, including an MBE in 1997, an OBE in 2006 and JP in 2014 for services to the arts.
McAlister was named Tatler Asia’s Most Influential in 2021 and Prestige Hong Kong’s Women of Power in 2025, and has been featured in several other press media including South China Morning Post, China Daily, Post Magazine, TheBeat.asia, Zolima Citymag and PRC Magazine for her artworks and arts leadership.
